Bass Nathan Resika has been praised for his “sonorous” voice by critics and colleagues alike, while carving out a niche for himself as both a Mozartian singer and an interpreter of modern works. Upcoming performances include his Opera North debut as Il Commendatore and Leporello in two separate casts of Don Giovanni. Other highlights of the 2009-10 season include Colline in La Boheme with both the New York Lyric Opera and Opera in the Heights, Alidoro in La Cenerentola with Jacksonville Lyric Opera, Lo zio Bonzo in Madama Butterfly with Opera Company of Brooklyn, and Leporello in Don Giovanni with the UCC Concerts Series in Montclair, NJ. Nathan also sang Silvano un Ballo in Maschera with NJ Verismo Opera, and Die Sanger in The Secret Agent at the Center for Contemporary Opera. Highlights of the past two years have seen Nathan performing the title role in Le Nozze di Figaro with Opera in the Heights, (where the Houston Press praised his “sonorous voice and sprightly acting”) , Colline in New Jersey Verismo Opera’s La Boheme, Police Sergeant in Pirates of Penzance with Opera New Jersey, Polyphemus in Handel’s Acis and Galatea at the Irvington Music Festival, Don Alfonso in Cosi Fan Tutte with Underworld Productions at Symphony Space(NYC), and the bass soloist in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the New Britain Symphony and Hartford Chorale. Nathan helped to create several roles in modern operas; among them Senator Heflin in Clarence and Anita by Ben Yarmolinsky, the diabolical Sir Danvers Carew in Barry O’Neal’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and The Man in J D MCClatchy and Francis Thorne’s Mario and the Magician, which was recorded for Albany Records. Nathan has performed in concert in Hungary, Greece, throughout the United States, and has sung the national anthem at several sporting events. He is also a chessmaster and tutor, and has been ranked among the top 200 players in the USA. Raised in New York City by a musical family, Nathan sang, acted, and played classical & folk guitar from an early age, and continued his studies at both New England Conservatory and the Longy School. |
